Van Amersfoort Racing shines with a double podium and victory at the Red Bull Ring

16/09/2024

Van Amersfoort Racing delivered a strong performance during the second round of the Euro 4 Championship at the Red Bull Ring. Despite challenging weather conditions and tough on-track battles, the team managed to secure key podium finishes and valuable points for the championship.

Race 1 didn’t go as planned for Hiyu Yamakoshi, who was forced to retire after a late-race collision. Gustav Jonsson, however, finished a solid 7th coming from 22th, and securing important points for the championship.

In Race 2, Van Amersfoort Racing bounced back in style. Hiyu finished third while Gustav secured a strong second-place finish, giving the team a double podium. Both Lin Hodenius and Alvise Rodella gained valuable places during the race, continuing to gain confidence, but finishing outside the points.

Starting from 4th, Hiyu took his first win of the weekend in the last Austrian race after a post-race penalty was handed to Slater, who made contact with Gustav during a battle for the lead. Gustav started from the front row and had a good start. He fought for first place but, unfortunately, ended up in the gravel after this contact in Turn 4. Andrija Kostić gained five places during the race, showing signs of steady progress.

With Hiyu now second and Gustav fourth in the overall championship standings and the team showing solid form, Van Amersfoort Racing leaves Austria with optimism. The team is looking forward to the final round of the Euro 4 Championship in Monza.

Hiyu Yamakoshi: “Super happy with the weekend! I had strong race pace and a great car, but didn’t expect these results after day one. Huge thanks to my engineer and mechanics for turning things around. A bit of bad luck in Race 1, but I got my first podium in the wet! Race 3 was amazing, with great pace that brought me to P1! Huge thanks to the team – let’s keep pushing for the rest of the season!”

Gustav Jonsson: “Up and down weekend with the rain and cold weather. Qualifying 1 was tough. I was not feeling confident with the car in the light drizzle while out on slicks. For Qualifying 2, we made big improvements and got the front row secured! Race 1 was a lot of fun, going from P22 to P7. Unfortunately, the safety cars and being pushed off track cost us, but we had amazing speed that could have taken us to the podium. Race 2 in the wet, we’ve finished P2 from P3. But we struggled with the pace and had no chance to get P1. For Race 3, we started P2 and got a good start. We were attacking for P1 through the first 3 corners before going for the move in T4, but getting squeezed off. From there my front right, after a touch, was damaged and we quickly dropped out of contention. Unfortunate as we probably had the speed to win the race. But we move on and focus on Barcelona in 2 weeks!”

Lin Hodenius: “I came to this weekend with maybe a bit too high expectations since the very good results in the test, so the P18 in qaulifying was quite a hard blow. The races have definitely rebuilt my confidence, and I’m really looking forward to Barcelona! The Barcelona circuit suits me very well so I hope we can score some good points.”
